Experts Reveal the Best Wrinkle Treatments for Men

Age-fighting treatments every man should consider

Growing numbers of men are concerned about lines and wrinkles on their faces that can make them appear older and tired, in turn making it difficult to compete against younger-looking counterparts in the job market or confidently hold their own as weekend warriors and on the dating scene.

Men may be just as bothered by wrinkles as women, but there are key gender differences in terms of why men and women develop wrinkles and how their skin quality and grooming habits affect their treatment choices.

Beards, goatees, mustaches and other facial hair patterns allow men to hide more skin (and wrinkles) than women. Shaving, however, may allow men to get rid of hair and dead skin cells on the skin’s surface in one fell swoop. Shaving is similar to a popular wrinkle-removing procedure called dermaplaning which uses a straight-edge razor to remove the dead layers of skin cells and reveal younger skin underneath.

Men also have thicker skin, larger pores and produce more oil than women, and this may also be protective. Oil provides moisture and a plump look to the skin, reducing the appearance of fine line and wrinkles. Dermal thickness and collagen density have been shown to be less in females than in males, and skin collagen decreases with age.

On the flip side, men are less likely than women to use sunscreen, which is known to stave off wrinkles. They are also more likely to smoke and drink alcohol excessively; both of these habits will increase the risk of wrinkles.

Barry DiBernardo

According to New Jersey plastic surgeon Barry DiBernardo, “Our male patients are interested in looking more youthful without appearing to have had any intervention. While we have many men coming in for hair restoration and body sculpting, they are also bothered by lower face laxity, deep nasolabial folds, and lines and wrinkles around the eyelid area.”

While women make up the majority of those seeking wrinkle-reducing treatments, men are slowly closing up the gap. In 2019, men accounted for nearly 10% of all injectables , including neuromodulators and soft tissue fillers, according to The Aesthetic Society. Men are also choosing other wrinkle-reducing treatments, including chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing and intense pulsed light (IPL). And they are not necessarily averse to wrinkle-smoothing surgery either if it means looking younger. Fully 16.6% of all eyelid surgery and 16.4% of all neck lifts were performed on men in 2019.

Top Wrinkle-Reducing Procedures for Men

Facial Injectables

Injections of dermal fillers such as Juvederm Voluma, Restylane Lyft, or Sculptra replace lost volume to fill wrinkles from the inside out. Neuromodulators like Botox Cosmetic and Dysport block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine, which triggers muscle contractions that create wrinkles. Results last up to several months depending on the injectable used and the amount. Men have stronger muscles which often necessitates a greater amount of injectable products to achieve the desired result.

Chemical peels

During a peel, a chemical solution removes the outer layer of old skin. The new skin is usually smoother, firmer, and less wrinkled. Peels come in various strengths; the stronger the peel, the greater the associated downtime and the more visible results can be achieved. Men may benefit from one deeper peel for coarse wrinkles and acne scars, and a series of several lighter peels is usually necessary for optimal results.

Laser skin resurfacing

Ablative lasers remove the upper layer of skin, revealing more youthful skin. Non-ablative lasers, by contrast, bypass the upper layer of skin and boost the production of collagen and elastin under its surface for smoother, less wrinkled skin. Collagen and elastin are building blocks for healthy skin, and their production slows down with age. Ablative lasers such as CO2 for example, require a longer healing period and comes with more risks than less invasive energy-based treatments.

IPL

IPL, or intense pulsed light, uses light to penetrate the skin and boost collagen and elastin stores, reducing wrinkles from the inside out. About 4-6 sessions are usually needed, and results will appear gradually after each session.

Dr. DiBernardo

“Unlike more aggressive options, which can cause damage to the upper skin, may involve a long healing period, Sofwave is effective, and our male patients can go right back to their busy lives quickly after a treatment,” Dr. DiBernardo says.

Results are apparent after the first 45-minute session, but another session may be recommended for optimal cosmetic results, especially in more mature men who have thicker skin.
