PureImpact VIP + Sofwave™: A Total Body Solution After Weight Loss

PureImpact VIP + Sofwave™: A Total Body Solution After Weight Loss

You may have reached your weight-loss goal and still notice changes you were not expecting. Some areas may look different because of changes in the skin, while others may have less visible muscle shape or definition.

Loose skin and reduced muscle tone after weight loss can appear together, but they involve different tissues and may require different treatment approaches. Sofwave™ and PureImpact VIP are separate non-invasive technologies with different FDA-cleared roles.

The Short Answer

Sofwave's FDA-cleared indications include improving facial lines and wrinkles, lifting the eyebrow and lax neck and submental tissue, and improving the appearance of upper-arm skin laxity. PureImpact VIP is FDA-cleared to strengthen healthy muscles and improve muscle tone in the abdomen, arms, thighs, and buttocks.

Neither technology is a weight-loss or fat-reduction treatment. A qualified provider can determine whether Sofwave™, PureImpact VIP, or both as separate treatments may be appropriate within an overall care plan.

Why Weight Loss Can Leave Two Different Concerns Behind

What Happens to Skin After Weight Loss?

Your skin may not fully adapt to changes in your body size, particularly after substantial weight loss. How much lax or excess skin remains depends on factors such as your age, genetics, and baseline skin characteristics, how much weight you lost and how quickly, and the body area. Research on skin samples taken after massive weight loss has documented changes in collagen and elastic fibers, the structural proteins that help skin hold its shape. If you have significant excess skin that needs to be removed, an energy-based treatment cannot remove it.

For more detail, see our guide to understanding and managing loose skin after weight loss.

What Happens to Muscle Tone After Weight Loss?

You may also notice less muscle shape or definition, which is a separate concern from skin laxity. Changes in your muscles and overall body composition can affect how an area looks after weight loss, but conditioning your muscles is different from treating your skin or reducing fat.

Other Ways to Address Skin and Muscle Changes After Weight Loss

Strength Training and Nutrition

Resistance training is one of the most effective ways to maintain and build muscle, and getting enough protein supports that process. If you lost weight with a GLP-1 medication, your doctor may recommend both to help you preserve lean mass as your body changes.

Skincare and Time

Sun protection, moisturizing, and a consistent routine support your overall skin health, and some skin may adapt gradually after weight loss. Topical products, however, cannot reverse significant laxity.

Surgical Options

If you have significant excess skin, surgical procedures such as a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), arm lift (brachioplasty), thigh lift, or lower body lift remove it directly. These procedures involve anesthesia, incisions, scarring, and a longer recovery, and they are typically performed once your weight has been stable for some time.

What Sofwave™ Does

Sofwave™ uses Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam Technology (SUPERB™) to deliver ultrasound energy into the dermis and support collagen remodeling, which a study led by Jean Carruthers observed in treated skin over the long term.

Energy is delivered at an average depth of about 1.5 mm in the mid-dermis, while integrated SofCool™ cooling protects the outer layer of the skin. Sofwave™ is cleared by the US FDA to treat facial wrinkles and showed improvement in a clinical study conducted by Arielle Kauvar and Roy Geronemus, and a 2025 study in Dermatologic Surgery evaluated its use for skin laxity of the upper arms. A separate study by Michael Gold and Julie Biron evaluated Sofwave™ for facial skin laxity.

Its U.S. FDA-cleared indications include improving facial lines and wrinkles, lifting the eyebrow and lax submental and neck tissue, and improving the appearance of upper-arm skin laxity. Sofwave™ does not reduce fat, replace lost volume, or serve as a general whole-body treatment for loose skin.

A full-face and neck treatment takes approximately 30-45 minutes. Patients may resume their daily life quickly post-treatment.

What PureImpact VIP Does

PureImpact VIP uses PlyoPulse electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to stimulate healthy muscles. Its FDA-cleared indications include improving muscle tone and strength in the abdomen, arms, thighs, and buttocks.

A 2026 randomized controlled study of 38 healthy adults found that six weekly PureImpact VIP sessions targeting the abdominal, thigh, and buttock muscles were associated with measurable gains in strength and endurance tests, as well as improved body self-perception. Because participants had not recently lost substantial weight or used GLP-1 medication, the study does not establish that PureImpact VIP restores muscle lost during weight loss.

For more detail on the technology and how it works, see our guide to PureImpact VIP and PlyoPulse™ muscle stimulation.

How PureImpact VIP and Sofwave™ Can Fit Into One Total Body Plan

When comparing non-surgical body treatments after weight loss, the key question is what is creating the change you see. Skin laxity, reduced muscle definition, remaining fat, and significant excess skin are different concerns and may require different approaches.

Sofwave™ and PureImpact™ VIP have different indications and remain separate treatments rather than one combined FDA-cleared procedure.

For a broader discussion of treating skin and muscle as separate targets, read Longevity in Aesthetic Medicine: Healthy Skin and Muscle Regeneration. For a provider’s perspective, see our look at aesthetic regeneration during and after weight loss.

What to Expect at Your Consultation

During a consultation, your provider will look at each area that concerns you and assess whether the change comes mainly from skin, muscle, remaining fat, or excess skin. They will ask about your weight-loss journey, including how much weight you lost, how quickly, whether your weight has stabilized, and any medications you take. From there, they can explain whether Sofwave™, PureImpact VIP, both as separate treatments, or a different approach such as surgery may suit your goals.

Looking at the Whole Picture After Weight Loss

After weight loss, what you see in the mirror may have more than one cause. Once you know which tissue is behind each change, it becomes much easier to choose the right treatment.

Sofwave™ and PureImpact VIP address different needs: Sofwave™ has specific FDA-cleared aesthetic indications, while PureImpact VIP targets muscle tone and strength in specific body areas. If you have both skin and muscle concerns, a qualified provider can help you decide whether either or both technologies fit your treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can Sofwave™ and PureImpact VIP be done in the same visit?

Potentially, depending on your provider and the areas you want to address. The two technologies work on different tissues: Sofwave™ delivers ultrasound energy into the dermis, while PureImpact VIP stimulates muscle contractions. Because they remain separate treatments, your provider will decide whether to schedule them in one appointment or on different days. That decision can depend on the treatment areas, your comfort, and your medical history.

  • Are Sofwave™ and PureImpact VIP weight-loss treatments?

No. Neither technology causes weight loss, and neither is cleared for fat reduction. Sofwave™ is FDA-cleared for specific aesthetic indications, including improving facial lines and wrinkles and improving the appearance of upper-arm skin laxity. PureImpact VIP is FDA-cleared to improve muscle tone and strength in the abdomen, arms, thighs, and buttocks. If weight management is still your main goal, speak with your doctor about medical or lifestyle options first.

  • Does PureImpact VIP treat skin laxity?

No. PureImpact VIP uses electrical muscle stimulation to work on muscle, and its FDA-cleared indications cover muscle tone and strength in the abdomen, arms, thighs, and buttocks. Skin laxity and muscle tone involve different layers of tissue, so they usually call for different approaches. If loose skin on your upper arms bothers you, Sofwave™ is FDA-cleared to improve the appearance of skin laxity on the upper arms. A qualified provider can help you work out whether skin, muscle, or both are behind what you see.

  • How many sessions of Sofwave™ and PureImpact VIP are needed?

It depends on the device, the area being treated, and your goals. In the 2026 randomized controlled study of PureImpact VIP, healthy adults had six weekly sessions targeting the abdominal, thigh, and buttock muscles. Sofwave™ protocols vary by indication, and a full-face and neck treatment takes approximately 30-45 minutes. Your provider will suggest a schedule based on your needs and how you respond to treatment.

  • How soon after weight loss can I consider treatment?

Timing depends on the area, the concern being treated, your medical history, and other personal factors. Many people wait until their weight has stabilized, so it is easier to see which changes remain. If you are still losing weight, for example on a GLP-1 medication, talk to the doctor who prescribes it as well as your aesthetic provider. A qualified provider can then assess whether you are a good candidate and when treatment may make sense.

  • Can PureImpact VIP replace exercise?

No. PureImpact VIP is intended to stimulate healthy muscles to improve muscle performance, and its FDA clearance describes it as a technique of muscle training. Think of it as a complement to regular exercise rather than a replacement, since physical activity also supports heart health, bone health, and overall fitness. After weight loss, doctors often recommend resistance training and enough protein to help preserve muscle. Your provider can explain how PureImpact VIP might fit alongside your current routine.
