Top KOLs See Consistent Outcomes Using Novel Ultrasound Device
Truly disruptive technology is rare in the medical aesthetic space, but Sofwave Medical has accomplished just that, leapfrogging ahead of the competition with an innovative device that provides advanced wrinkle reduction and skin rejuvenation treatments.
The Sofwave device utilizes SUPERB™ (Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam Technology), in which all seven transducers are triggered simultaneously to deliver a high amount of energy into the mid-dermis, increasing tissue temperatures between 60 C to 70 C. At these temperatures, tissue remodeling occurs via collagen contraction with subsequent neocollagenesis and neoelastogenesis. The synchronous high-intensity parallel beam array allows most of the thermal injury to remain localized at depths of 0.5 mm to 2 mm, with the treatment centered at 1.5 mm. The mid-dermal layer is covered with multiple cylindrical thermal zones creating a distinctive array of 3D volumetric impact. These coagulated columns lie parallel to the skin surface along the same direction as the collagen fibers. The unique nature of this tissue impact comprises a large spot size and high energy delivered with each pulse, which creates a very high volume coagulation coverage (28% to 42% coagulation) resulting in significant collagen remodeling.
Sofwave also features SofCool™, which provides proprietary feedback-controlled skin cooling via unique thermo-cooled direct contact transducers. SofCool also offers enhanced patient comfort and safety, and contributes to the no downtime and no post treatment care characteristics of Sofwave treatments.
Jason D. Bloom, M.D., F.A.C.S., a plastic surgeon in Bryn Mawr, Penn., had been looking for an energy-based wrinkle reduction and skin tightening device as an alternative facial treatment modality in his surgical practice. ”It was very important that the device was non-invasive,” he said. ”Patients had to be able to tolerate the treatment and it had to be reasonably priced for them, as well. Consistent results were another priority. With other ultrasound or radiofrequency (RF) treatments patients would pay thousands of dollars and barely see any results. That will not fly in my practice. Sofwave is extremely safe and produces good results.”
In addition to advanced technology, the Sofwave system offers practitioners a comparatively low consumable cost. ”Unlike other devices, Sofwave has implemented a consumable in the form of numbers of pulses,” stated Suzanne Kilmer, M.D., a dermatologist in Sacramento, Calif. ”The physician buys a certain number of pulses, which are downloaded to the device. Practices can charge less per treatment because the cost per pulse is very reasonable, and is less expensive than what other manufacturers charge for consumables.”
As stated by Dr. Bloom, ”The economic model is totally benefiting my practice, as well as my patients. The consumable cost is far more reasonable than the competition. In addition, you only use the number of pulses you need for a specific treatment, such as on the brow, submental or on the neck. Because the unit time to treat one patient is quicker, the result is more profit for the practice per treatment.”
Results can be seen in as little as a single treatment. Compared with other aesthetic energy-based devices on the market, the Sofwave produces a ”kinder, gentler” treatment that does not employ needles. For most patients, discomfort can be managed with the use of a topical anesthetic. Additionally, the device operates independent of patient impedance variations that plague RF-based systems in this product category. As a consequence, Sofwave is truly ”color blind” and patients of all Fitzpatrick skin types can be safely treated.
